Exam Question (10 marker)

How has Media Language been used to create meaning in The Lego Movie campaign? (10 marks) (3 points)

In 'The Lego Movie' poster campaign, Lord business consumes most of the shot and only a small section of the background is shown. This connotes how he dominates and is an authoritative figure. This reflects how in the movie he dictates society. He also has a physically big head which signifies  how highly he views himself and the rest of society are inferior to him. This creates meaning because the audience can see that the character is a villain.

In 'The Lego Movie' trailer, there is an advert recreating the 'Confused.com' advert. In the advert there are teenagers featured, they are seen congregating in a car park. This reflects the stereotypical youth hanging around outside-  (nice use of a dash) it is attempted to be made as realistic as possible so young audiences can identify with the advert and invest in 'Confused.com' car insurance- they also include a range of ethnicities which reflects the society of 2014 and it appeals to everyone, showing that the lego movie is for everyone.

Another point in the trailer is the straight-on angle with emmet, this connotes how he is equal to the audience and everyone else in that Lego fanatical world. He is the non-conventional hero as he is repeatedly screaming and being dominated by 'Wyldstyle', who challenges the princess role.

WWW- You identified great point,  developed quite clearly,  related the advertising campaign to the film and real life.

Context

Context

Capitalism - An economic and political system in which a country's trade an industry are controlled by private owners

Lord Business
-Villan
-President of Lego Land
-He presides over a dictatorial
 state
-His regime (political ideology) creates virtually everything in the Lego society
-He creates televised broadcasts to inform his citizens (with a friendly grin on his face) that if they rebel they will be executed
-He controls a secret police who are ordered to torture rebels

How Lord business is reflected in the poster
-He is towering over everyone
-Everyone is hysterically running away from him
-He has complete control over the evil characters

How this reflects American society
-Lord business is a symbol of austerity
-In 2014 there were difficult economic conditions created by government measures to reduce public expenditure (pay cuts, property cuts) due to the economic slump and world wide recession that began 2008

To what extent does Propp's character theory fit the lego movie poster campaign. (5 marks)

The Lego Movie's Wyldstyle poster campaign challenges the conventional role of the princess. The dominant stereotype for the princess role is to be a helpless 'damsel in distress' type character who relies on a hero to help them. This challenges this stereotype as Wyldstyle is an independent, powerful sidekick who is sure of herself and confident and aids Emmet to mold into his Hero role. This fits the genre as post-modernism is a new age for females to show they can be just as dominating as men. Another example is Emmet. In the main Lego Movie poster, it says the story is about 'a nobody who saves everybody' implying he is clueless and not as confident as he is supposed to be. Also, his facial expression is worried and scared which shows that he is aa regular person in society who fears the higher power.
