-The Lego Movie uses the tent pole idea of tent-pole production

Tent-pole - A film which is expected to generate a lot of income for a studio, income from tent-pole can fund other releases (tent-pole supports a tent)

-Warner Bros. is a conglomerate

-The Lego Movie funded other film releases and it got the producer (Dan Lin) recognition and success

-UK own film and because of its success it was then distributed

-Targeted at British audience with British humour but it was so successful they made it globally available

-There was tension between LEGO and Warner Bros. because they both used the film to promote their own products

Postmodernism

-Challenges genre conventions and hybridising
(mixing genres appeals to more of a mass audience)
(in sequels they have more to build off e.g. exploring love relationship)

-Challenge typical character roles
(Emmet as average hero)
(Wyldstyle is the strongest of the group and she's female)
(Batman isn't as heroic

Pastiche - imitates/has similarities with other films, books etc. and has a humorous take on serious issues
(intertextuality with the matrix with a similar narrative and gives the message that you don't have to conform to rules and be individual)

Hyper-reality - makes the audience aware that they are watching a movie (breaking the forth wall)
(talking to audience like in Fleabag or Deadpool)

  1. The tent pole section is very important! Why do companies (such as Warner Bros) benefit from tent poles?
